About

Department of Music at S.N.D.T. Women’s University views itself amongst the few departments in the Indian universities system, where a serious student can remain in continuous contact with the same Faculty (guru(s) from senior secondary (i.e.class XI) up to the M.A. degree level, and beyond up to the Ph.D. degree. Department has an envious tradition of attracting good faculty and extremely good and motivated students. However, the department today yearns for modern infrastructure and technology assisted environs to let the student explore their full potential as budding performing artists in an unhindered manner, while they study at the university.

Department initiated the organization of National Seminars in Music in 2003. During last five years National Seminars in Music on Contemporary topics of research in Music at Indian Universities (in 2006).

Rare compositions and rare Ragas in Hindustani Classical Music and their relevance for contemporary teaching at Post Graduate level in Indian Universities (in 2009). Each of the first three national seminars have been attended by about 100 teachers, researchers and eminent artists invited from all over India.

Focus Area

Hindustani Classical Music, Vocal and instrumental, its contemporary impact on popular forms of music in Films, TV, fusion music, Folk music of different states, Natya Sangeet tradition of Maharashtra, etc.

Mission

We strive to equip our students with adequate broad based training in Entire Music and confidence to find gainful employment in contemporary times. We yearn to inspire creativity & excellence, promote teamwork, performing art communication skill, and reinforce self-confidence, discipline and pride. Those who may not have the potential to make a mark as professional artists are encouraged to develop skills to write project reports and /or pursue opportunities in the commercial art. We also guide academically oriented students to pursue Ph.D. in Music.

A project titled ‘A study of enrichment of Khayal Gayal tradition of Hindustani Classical Music by prominent modern composers (since Indian Independence), Completed on behalf of Dept. of Culture, GOI, New Delhi. Two cassettes containing self-renderings of ‘Forth-three compositions of twenty-three Vagyakars’ sent to New Delhi in 1998. PI: Dr. Neera Grover.

A project titled ‘‘Comparative Study of Similar Ragas’, Completed on behalf of Department of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi, 2001. PI: Dr. Neera Grover.

Activities

Naad Ranjan Activity (Concerts and Workshops by renowned artists), Hosting of National seminars every three years, encouraging and preparing students for participation in National Competitions and serious TV programmes on Music.
