About

Department of Economics at Churchagate Campus was established in 1972, under the able leadership of Prof. Ramesh Panse, Prof. S K G Sundaram and Prof. Vibhuti Patel, each for more than a decade. Today the department inculcates market oriented skills in students by conducting workshops, seminars and internships.

In the contemporary world of increased globalization and interconnectivity, the Department of Economics, SNDTWU , is offering courses and programs that would facilitate the students to overcome the challenges in a highly competitive twenty-first century. Economics is a discipline that is both complex and equally interesting in nature as it embraces deep knowledge of philosophy and thereby penetrates the daily life of human being. Understanding this unique feature, the department has been constantly making efforts to engage its students and faculties to involve in collaborative research which would contribute to the society.

Our Goals

To introduce the students to the advanced theories in economics.

To equip students with analytical tools of economics to understand the current economic reality with perspective of problem solving.

To introduce the tools of empirical analysis.

To offer a wide range of courses enabling the students in their pursuit of specialization – e.g. economics of labour, industry, gender, social & physical infrastructure etc.

To organise various curricular and co-curricular academic programmes.

The Department of Economics envisions becoming a center of excellence in education, research and policy advocacy, with a focus on women’s empowerment. It aims to enable women to become insightful thinkers, effective leaders, and agents of positive socio-economic change in India and beyond by imparting inclusive, equitable, and sustainable education.

Notable Achievements:

Ananya Prem Nath is a distinguished Research Consultant and Head of the Student Connect Program at World Commerce & Contracting. She is renowned not only for her academic and professional achievements but also for her active engagement in various global platforms. Holding dual master's degrees – an MBA from Durham University in the UK and a Master's in Economics from SNDT University in Mumbai – she has an impressive academic foundation. Ananya's passion for education extends beyond her own studies, as evidenced by her founding of the Student Connect Program, which supports students worldwide. She also plays a vital role in the Inspiring Indian Women UK chapter and serves as an Editor for the Economic Digest of the Maharashtra Economic Development Council.

Asmita Sharma

Ms. Asmita Sharma completed her Masters from Department of Economics, SNDT Women's University, Mumbai. While studying, she participated in State and Zonal level inter-university youth festival for Folk Dance, Rangoli, Folk Orchestra and Installation. She got Silver medal in Rangoli and Bronze medal for folk dance in State level inter-university youth festival.

I worked as a volunteer in the UGC sponsored State Level Panel Discussion on ‘ Tax reforms in India’ in SNDT women’s university , Mumbai. Also attended a workshop on ‘Online safety, cyber etiquette and social media for social change’ in SNDT Women’s University , Mumbai. Bagged 02nd prize at Inter-collegiate level research paper presentation competition held at Maniben Nanavati College , Mumbai. Chaitanya Sunke

Chaitannya Manoj Sunke completed her masters in Economics with 78.3 per cent from S. N. D. T. University, Churchgate Campus. On the basis of her academic excellence her university nominated her for Ministry of External Affairs' and Japan Government's JENESYS 2017 program during the beginning of her M. A. Part 2 program. Japanese Government and Ministry of External Affairs, India selected only 11 Masters in Economics students across India and Chaitanya was one of them. She represented India in Japan for JENESYS 2017 program for SAARC countries. She is also getting trained in North Indian Classical Music and she has just cleared Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalay's Madhyama Purna (level 5) examination. She is currently working as Executive Producer for Colors Marathi's show 'Navara Asava Tar Asa.'

Notable Achievements

Nandini Dubey is the Founder and Content Specialist at Pa Se Paisa Information Solutions. She has been in the Financial Content Domain for 10+ years now. She strategized, designed and wrote for brands like Kuvera, Aditya Birla Sun Life Capital, Tata Mutual Fund, Tata Capital, SBI Securities, Samco Securities, Fi Money, Way To Wealth Insurance Brokers, Pareto Capital and more. Before starting her company in October 2019, she was associated with another content agency where she strategised and developed content for UTI Swatantra, Kotak Securities, Bajaj finserv and more.

Sneha Pawar

Notable Achievements

Ms. Sneha Pawar working as assistant professor in Nagindas Khandwala College. She cleared NET in economics and qualified to work as assistant professor. She received master’s degree in Economics from SNDT Women’s University. She also won quiz competition in SNDT University. During her master’s programme she presented a paper on labour studies in TISS, Mumbai. She done internship with the EPW and eSocial Science. She submitted her dissertation on “Trajectory of Manufacturing Industry in India during post reform period” in the last semester of her master’s programme.

Other Activities

1. Inauguration of Marathi Vangmay Mandal by Mrs Uma  Parab, Assi. Registrar, affiliation section, SNDTWU.

2. Students of Dept of Marathi started wall paper for creative writing display.

3. Guest lecture was organised on “Indian Scripts and Coins” by Dr. Dilip Balsekar,Director, Gazetteer, Govt. of  Maharashtra on Sept. 30, 2016

4. Students of Dept of Marathi performed a street play on  the theme “Save Water” written and directed by MA 1 student Ms Reshma Pawar.

5. The Department organised visit to Adivasi ashram shala at Panvel. There our students observed the activities of the school and interacted with the school children and staff there.

6. The Department organised visit to Akhil Bharateey Marathi  Sahitya Sammelan at Dombivali where our students had opportunity to meet Prof. Akshaykumar Kale, the  Hon. President of Sammelan and other Marathi writers. They also visited the grand book fair.

Marathi Din on February 27, 2017 at Sangli
The cultural and musical programme ‘Marathi Nama” introducing the Marathi literature with historical perspective and a short film highlighting special features of SNDTWU were the important aspects of the programme. Marathi authors from Sangli district were honoured at this occasion.Honourable officials, eminent personalities such as authors,dramatists, artists participated in the programme.
